Antique BaKuba Ceramic Pot

Antique BaKuba Ceramic Pot

This handsome ceramic was most likely used to mix natural pigments to be used ceremonially in traditional BaKuba/Bushoong culture.

Twisted raffia cord is tied to the incised handle so it could be safely hung when not being used. Classic Kuba geometric patterns decorate the circumference of the bowl and handle. Traces of red tukula powder and white kaolin are in evidence inside and out. This is a beautiful object that is rarely seen today. I have enjoyed its presence for over three decades.
